Good Morning Family!!
YES!! I am so happy right now. So, so, so, so Happy!
Amidst all of the auto-tuned madness, ringtone rap and buck dancin' buffoonery, my favorite hip hop duo of all time, EPMD (Erick and Parrish Makin' Dollars) is preparing to drop an incredible album next Tuesday. Of course, your boy has an advanced copy and my auditory system has already devoured it several times over.
Is the album a smash? It's a very close one. I give the album about a -A over a B+. The men from Brentwood, L.I., aka the "Boondox" have done the damn thing. 13 tracks of realness...Praise him!!!
Like all of their past LPs, the "Business" theme is continued - Thus, the new album is titled, "We Mean Business." Right out the gate, they come blasting withe Raekwon the Chef assisted "Puttin' In Work." Other noteworthy collaborations are the KRS-One helmed "Run It", which samples a classic Just-Ice beat. Def Squad members Keith Murray and Redman show up on the cuts "Yo" and "They Tell Me." Nothing much to tell there...they do what they are known to do...rip tracks apart. Method-Man joins the fray with "Never Defeat Em'."
Being a disciple of the Roger Troutman School of Funk, the Funk Vocoder Godson Teddy Riley laces the duo with a incredibly ill track entitled "Listen Up." (Note to T-Pain and all auto tune heads, this is how you freak a track using a synthesized voice).
It's no secret that E-Double and PMD has had their share of beef during the 90's and these grown men have since squashed it. But on the O-Jay sampled "Bac Stabbers" they address all the naysayers who said that the boys from L.I. couldn't grow up and conduct business like the legends they are.
The missteps on the album are the boring "Actin' Up" featuring newcomers Vic D. and Tre (who?), "Jane" was a bit too short for my liking and the fellas seemed a bit bored with the storyline and lastly, "Blow".
In any case, this album is dope for these 40 somethings. After their 9 year hiatus, it's great to see that these guys still have what it takes to make dope hip hop albums.
One - Cap-D
PS: There was going to be a double disc Hit-Squad and Def Squad LP, but K-Solo kcufed everything up and decided not to participate in it. What a loser...
